These types of posts will only be providing a brief summary on rare and bizarre MHDs which most of us may not even know about.
So, let’s begin…
Alice in wonderland syndrome, or visual migraines, is a neuropsychiatric disorder common amongst those who have experienced brain traumas, tumours and have temporal lobe epilepsy.
A person with this syndrome tend to experience visual distortions or visual migraines, such as seeing objects and their own body inaccurately. They also experience a loss in their sense of time, feeling as though time is passing by very slowly or quickly.
Did you know, Lewis Carroll, the author of the 19th century novel Alice in Wonderland, also experienced visual migraines.
The typical migraine that most people have experienced in their lives perceive an aura, or a series of visual disturbances like flashes of light or crazy patterns. They also experience severe headaches, nausea, and vomiting, and in rare cases the Alice in Wonderland Syndrome seen in the list below.
Now I’m going to throw in the fancy keywords explaining each visual distortion experienced by the individual with the disorder.
- Micropsia (seeing objects as smaller than they really are)
- Macropsia (seeing objects as larger than they really are)
- Teleposia (seeing objects as further away than they really are)
- Micro/macro somatognosia (the patient feels as though their body is smaller or larger than it really is)
The underlying cause for this is still unknown, but a theory can be drawn related to the malfunctioning of neurons in the brain. So the 5 senses (sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing) create the overall perception for all beings. If the neurons in the brain malfunction, it can cause visual distortions, causing the individual to experience illusions as listed above.
I hope you enjoyed this post and learnt something new.
