Anxiety is a mental disorder common to millions of people around the world.
According to the American Psychological Association, anxiety is “characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure…sweating, trembling, dizziness or a rapid heartbeat.”
Anxiety disorders can spring from different life events we all face from childhood through to the present day. The build-up of stress, fear and worry can heavily impact thought processes and eventually lead to overthinking.
So, is there a way we can control it naturally?
Today we’ll be looking at 4 ways we can naturally control anxiety symptoms.
- Achieving Mindfulness
As I touched on in my previous article called “Mindfulness”, achieving this quality can significantly benefit mental health in general. As we know, one major anxiety symptom is the fast-paced, overwhelming amount of thoughts in our minds, and the purpose of mindfulness is to calm the mind and body by building on positive anxiety-reducing habits and to mentally place yourself in the moment. One mindfulness exercise is to meditate and practise breathing techniques to physically calm the nervous system down.
Excercise
Simply going out for a walk or exercising in the gym for 20 minutes a day can help relieve anxiety symptoms and release “feel-good neurochemicals in the brain”, and ease muscle tension. Put your headphones on and let your mind get carried away with the music.
Herbal Teas
Herbal teas are very beneficial for your health in general and can improve your quality of sleep and reduce stress and anxiety levels.
New to herbal teas?
Then try chamomile or green tea. They’re very well known for their fantastic health benefits in treating mental health issues such as depression, stress, high blood pressure and muscle tension.
Creativity
One way to release the overwhelming amount of thoughts in our heads is to draw. It doesn’t have to make any sense. Drawing lines, zig-zags and swirls experimenting with different art forms like chalk, oil pastels, acrylic paints, watercolours, and pencils can help open your mind to creatively express your emotions and thoughts.
