Hey guys, I’ll be starting a mini series discussing the many aspects of mental health, to simply raise awareness on conditions some of us may not know about, and the general image mental health has had in our society over time.
I must stress that the content you’re about to read has been based on my own personal research and knowledge drawn from my studies at A-level. I will not be providing any professional advice, as I’m not qualified to do so. As I’ve said before, the aim of this series is to raise awareness of mental health by exploring different disorders and discussing issues like mental health stigmas in society, etc. from many perspectives.
Our understanding of mental health disorders (mhds) have developed with the progression of society, where psychological research on mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, etc. has enabled us to find treatments and ways to help peopple across all societies, cultures and religions.
There is a distinct difference between someone who has a mental health disorder (mhd) and someone who experiences emotions like stress, sadness and anger. The difference is that mhds i.e. Anxiety, depression, schizophrenia etc, limit the individual’s ability to live a normal life (to abide by society’s norms and values). This causes them to suffer from mhd stereotypes and stigmas, possibly making them feel oestracised from society or generally lonely, possessing a negative self image.
The following keywords, “awareness” and “open mindedness”, are two vital terms which must be applied to the topic of mental health. It is SO important that such topics are discussed in our society, because issues like mental health stigmas and stereotypes still persist, impacting a person’s ability to get a job, earn a living and generally live a normal life.
Even though we are more aware of psychological disorders and general mental health issues than generations before us, it’s still not enough, and so I hope my posts help to amplify the importance of mental health in society, raising awareness and encouraging us all to think in a more open minded way.
