How would you define ‘a stream of consciousness’?
Well for me, it’s the portrayal of the noise within our minds written down on paper. I guess you could describe it as a ‘mind dump’, where you just write without thinking about something specific.
There is no focus.
Just write.
Every morning I spend around 5 minutes or less, captivated in the flow of my pen as I write every word and thought that pops in mind. For example, I would jot down things I really want to buy, things I have to do today, any events I need to jot down before I forget, or simply how I feel or how my day was yesterday.
I guess you could call it a little morning conversation with yourself, checking in with your mental health and the tasks for the day.
So, how exactly can you fall into the flow of a stream of consciousness?
For starters, when you wake up in the morning, grab a piece of paper and a pen.
Now pause for a minute and close your eyes.
What’s rushing through your mind right now?
If you can’t pinpoint the thoughts, then open your eyes and look at your piece of paper.
What words pop into your mind?
Wite them down.
Gradually, your words will join together forming sentences and so on.
Before you know it, you’ve fallen into the flow of writing down your thoughts.
Watch yourself go as you begin to sketch out the unique nature of your mind!
It really is an eye-opener to better understand yourself!
Holding on to these thoughts can be draining, and so jotting them down on paper tends to do the trick! It may no work for everyone, but it would never hurt to try.
I highly recommend this form of journaling, as it is an effective way to de-clutter your mind.
Once you get the hang of it, You can make it into a daily habit, and don’t worry if that’s a struggle for you, I’m the same too and usually try my best to write something down every day.
It takes time and soon you’ll master this small habit of mindfulness!
You’ve got this!
